Our review

Apple Music is Spotify’s strongest challenger – and deliberately takes a different approach. Hi-Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192 kHz and Dolby Atmos are included in the standard plan at no extra cost, for €11.99 instead of Spotify’s €12.99. Rather than relying on algorithms alone, Apple leans on human editors and radio formats such as Apple Music 1.

A genuine unique feature is Apple Music Classical: the separate app solves the old problem of missing metadata in classical music and makes composer, conductor, orchestra and soloist searchable. On iPhone, AirPods, HomePod and Apple Watch the service feels seamless; on Android and Windows it is noticeably less polished.

Our verdict: if you already live in Apple’s ecosystem, you get audibly better quality than Spotify for less money. If you prefer the algorithm to serve up new music, expect to put in a little more effort.
